Many proven marine instruments still talk RS232: CTD probes, water quality sondes, altimeters, and older sonars. It’s a reliable standard, but its ±12 V signal levels will damage the 3.3 V serial ports on a Navigator or Raspberry Pi. This adapter handles the conversion for you. It has a USB-A plug on one end and 1.8 m of cable ending in color-coded bare wires, including TX, RX, and ground, on the other. You can solder or crimp the wires straight to your instrument’s pigtail, with no DB9 connector or custom level-shifting board required.
Plug it into your companion computer, and it appears as a standard serial port device in BlueOS, typically /dev/ttyUSB0. From there, you can route it via a BlueOS Serial Bridge to stream NMEA or other serial data over the tether to your topside computer, or read it directly in a relevant extension or script.
Whether you’re adding a science payload to a BlueROV2, pulling weather station data into a BlueBoat, or bringing a legacy sensor into a new system, the USB-RS232 Adapter is the simple, dependable way to connect RS232 hardware to your vehicle.
